Gabriele Grunewald, Heather Kampf, Travis Burkstrand to Compete at USATF Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23; Results from USA Cross Country, Indoor Meets
Minneapolis/St. Paul - Feb. 17, 2014 - Three Team USA Minnesota distance runners - Gabriele Grunewald, Heather Kampf and Travis Burkstrand - will compete at the USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque Feb. 22-23. They will be among the American competitors vying for a spot on the U.S. team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, March 7-9.
Grunewald is qualified to run both the 3000 meters and the 1500 meters. Her qualifying time for the 3000m is 8:53.87 and in the 1500m it is 4:12.76. The 3000 meter race is scheduled for Saturday at 5:31 p.m. and the 1500 will be held on Sunday at 3:54 p.m. (all times at this meet are Mountain time).
Although Kampf is qualified to run in the 800 and 1500 meters. she has chosen to run the 1500 meters due to scheduling conflicts with the rounds of the 800 and 1500. The 1500 meter race is on Sunday at 3:54 p.m. Kampf qualified for this race with a 4:30.14 mile on the indoor track, which is under the IAAF 4:31 mile standard.
Burkstrand will compete in the men's 1500 meters which will be held on Sunday at 4:18 p.m. He qualified for the event with a 4:00.15 mile on the indoor track.
The USATF Indoor Championships will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center track, which is at altitude. Two athletes from each event will be selected for Worlds based on finishing place and whether they have the IAAF standard for the distance.
USA Cross Country Championships - Feb. 15
Meghan Peyton finished seventh in the senior women's 8k (4.97 miles) and Jon Grey was 11th in the senior men's 12k (7.5 miles) at the USA Cross Country Championships held in Boulder, Colorado, on Feb. 15.
The USA Cross Country Championships will also be held in Boulder in February 2015. Next year the event will be a selection race for the U.S. team that will compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in China.
Indoor Track Meet Results
Gabriele Grunewald placed fifth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:53.95 at the NYRR Millrose Games in New York City on Feb. 15. The time was well under the IAAF World Indoor qualifying standard of 9:02 for the distance.
At the Husky Classic in Seattle on Feb. 15, Travis Burkstrand was second in his heat of the Invitational Mile with a time of 4:02.30. In Ames at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 14, Ben Sathre posted 14:11.18 in the 5000 meters.
