Team USA Minnesota News
Minneapolis/St. Paul - Nov. 1, 2012 - Team USA Minnesota's Andrew Carlson will be among the professional field of men and women that will compete at the ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 4. Despite the devastating and lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy, which hit the area earlier this week, both city and marathon officials have said the race would be held on Sunday as scheduled.
The professional women's start is at 9:10 a.m. (Eastern time), followed by the professional men and wave 1 at 9:40 a.m. The marathon route touches all five boroughs of New York City including Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. According to the New York Road Runners, which puts on the race, "our whole focus now is on delivering an event that can aid in New York's recovery" from the superstorm.
For the first time since 1993, the race will be televised live on ESPN2 with air time from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Eastern time). Some 47,000 people had signed up to run the marathon but that number is expected to be lower due to travel logistics and other storm-related issues.
Carlson will be competing in his second marathon when he takes to the streets of New York. His first was at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston last January where he ran a debut time of 2:11:24 to finish sixth overall in the men's field. Carlson had qualified to run the marathon trials based on his half marathon time.
The two-time national champion - 15k and 25k - most recently finished seventh at the USA 10 Mile Championships held in the Twin Cities on Oct. 7. His time was 47:48, which was a personal best in the distance.
