Minneapolis/St. Paul - March 1, 2011 - Team USA Minnesota's Matt Gabrielson will be among the competitors at the 34th annual Reedy River Run 10k in Greenville, South Carolina, on March 5. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern time).
Gabrielson has a best of 28:44 in the 10k on the roads and is preparing to run at the USA 15k Championships, which will be held in Jacksonville, on March 12. So far in 2011, Gabrielson has competed at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Men's Cross Country Team Challenge in January, and at the USA Cross Country Championships in February.
USA Indoor Track & Field Championships - Results Heather Kampf took the bronze in the women's 800 meter competition and teammate Gabriele Anderson came away with the bronze medal in the women's 1 mile race at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Albuquerque Feb. 26-27. The finals of both events were held on Sunday afternoon and were televised on ESPN.
Kampf posted a time of 2:04.73 in the semi-finals of the 800m on Saturday, and then ran 2:04.30 in the finals the next day (winning time was 2:02.27). Anderson's time in the mile was 4:36.64 (first place time was 4:34.96). In 2010, Kampf (then Dorniden) was the third place finisher as well in the 800m.
"The race was pretty predictable at the start with the favorite in the race (Phoebe Wright) getting out to a quick lead," said Kampf. "Her teammate, Erica Moore, and I settled in close behind. I anticipated running the race from near the front and was hoping to pour on an early kick to try and maybe come up to second or the win. In hindsight, I wish I would have kept a little bit closer contact on the top two, because my early kick was no match for both of their fast finishes. I was confident, however, that if I ran a decent race, I would be in the top three."
Last year Kampf went to Albuquerque two weeks prior to the race to adjust to the altitude and this year, decided to come to the city the night before her first heat on Saturday. "I can't say for certain but I think I felt pretty similar across the two years," she said. "With last year being an indoor world championships year, the races were certainly faster and the competition a bit deeper. This year the emphasis is primarily on outdoor so it was a much smaller meet at indoor. Obviously it was still quite competitive, as any national race should be, but I don't think anyone was hoping to peak for the year at this meet. I was happy to get in there and have a strong race, knowing that it is a stepping stone towards what is to come this spring and summer."
Both Kampf and Anderson will now turn their attention to preparing for the outdoor season, with both planning to include the Drake Relays on April 30, and the USA Road Mile Championships in Minneapolis on May 12, on their race schedule.
