Notes:
Matt grew up in northern Iowa where he played high school football and ran track. In track, he was a four-time state champion in the 4x800, 1600 (twice) and 3200 with high school PRs of 4:18 in the 1600 and 9:21 in the 3200.
He then ran track and cross country at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. While at Drake, Matt was a 12-time All-Missouri Valley Conference Performer. He also was a five-time Missouri Valley Conference champion - three indoor distance medley relays, the 3000m indoor, and the 3K steeple outdoors.
In 2003, Matt placed 3rd at the USA Men's 10k Road Championship with a time of 28:44. In 2004, he ran the 5000m at the U.S. Olympic Track Trials. At the USA Men's 5K Championships, Matt finished 3rd, He was also a member of the U.S. team at the Chiba Ekiden Relay.
In 2005, Matt placed 2nd in the USA Half Marathon Championships. At the USA Cross Country Championships, he placed 8th in the 12k and was selected for the 2005 U.S. World Cross Country team. At the USA 8k championships, he finished 6th in a personal best time of 23:08.
In 2006, he placed 6th at the USA Men's Half Marathon Championship and at the USA Cross Country Championships, Matt finished 6th in the 12k to compete for the U.S. World Cross Country team. Matt placed 7th in the USA 15k Championships in a time of 45:29. Matt competed in the 5000m at USA Outdoor. Matt made his debut in the marathon distance at the 2006 ING New York City Marathon in a time of 2:19:53.
In 2007, Matt was selected as a member of the U.S. World team to compete in Mombasa, Kenya. Matt also competed in the 5000 meters at the USA Outdoor Championships.
For 2008, he was 9th at the USA Half Marathon Championships, 10th at the 15k Championships, and 8th at the USA Olympic Trials in the 5000m. At the USA Marathon Championship, Matt placed 2nd and earned a spot on the 2009 U.S. marathon team at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin.
Matt joined Team USA Minnesota in 2001.
